To start, lets see what you know and what your interests are. There are three things you need to do:
- Complete the survey below knowing that it is not a test, but just a way to find out where we need to start.
- Create a website that you will use to post your reflection as well as to display your work. Let me know if you need assistance with this task. For now you need to create only two pages: a blog page and page called my favourite images.
- Post five of your favourite images (be sure to include the link with them) for other photographer and, for each of them, write a short blurb to explain why you like them. Select two of your own favourite image and explain how you took them and why you like them.

Assignment #2
After this assignment, you will have a better understanding of the following:
-Contrast
-High key low key
-Bracketing
-Under and over exposure
-Fill in light
-Spot metering vs average metering
You task is to capture images with the following conditions
-6 different subjects in high contrast conditions
----3 in hi key (white background - dark subject)
----3 in low key (dark background - light subject)
-6 low contrast subjects
---2 mostly light (white background - white subject)
---2 mostly dark (dark background - dark subject)
---2 mostly mid-tone(grey)
For each subject, you need to use the bracketing technique to get a minimum of 5 images: 1 underexposed at 2 stops - 1 underexposed at 1 stop - one as per the automatic setting on your camera- 1 overexposed at one stop - 1 overexposed at 2 stops.
You should have a setting on your camera to allow you to go - or + from the regular exposure.
One stop would be - or + 1 as opposed to - or + 1 1/2.
Keep in mind that this is a discovery assignment, so don't worry about taking perfect pictures or about marks. Just follow the instructions. If my instructions are not clear, be sure to let me know.
Take two stunning pictures one in high key and one in low key
Have fun!

Assignment #3
Portrait with a purpose
Taking portraits is more than just setting up the studio lights. The difference between a regular portrait and good portrait is that, on top of being technically perfect, a good portrait captures the essence of the subject's personality. A good family portrait for instance would require more than a properly light group of of individuals staring at the camera, it would show or evoke the relationship to one another. It is a difficult thing to do and it involves knowing your subject, either personally or publicly. Yousuf Karsh, arguably the most famous Canadian photographer, is a master portraitist. He combines lighting, props, composition, and facial expressions to convey the personality of his subject. Look at some of his most famous shots and the history behind the image to get a sense of what a good portrait is: http://www.karsh.org/#/the_work/portraits
Also, check this site to get ideas on how you can take better portrait photos than the average photographer.

Task
Your task for this project is to produce a portrait of two different people or pets to post on your portfolio. Each portrait should be accompanied by a paragraph describing your process ( what you wanted to achieve, what you did to make it happen, how successful you think you were).
Note
You are welcome to use the studio, but don't let that limit your creativity. Feel free to do it wherever you think it will help you bring out the personality of your subjects.
